Marx Prophecy

Karl Marx is showing up around the net with this quote from Das Kapital:

“Owners of capital will stimulate the working class to buy more and more of expensive goods, houses and technology, pushing them to take more and more expensive credits, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to bankruptcy of banks, which will have to be nationalised, and the State will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism…”

Before scaring anyone let me just confess to belonging to the very liberal and slightly dark right crowd :). It is an interesting quote though and Das Kapital is an interesting book (yes I’ve only read the summary).

Update: I might have been owned on this one: http://depressionwatch.blogspot.com/2009/01/karl-marx-quote-fake.html

That Marx quote is a HOAX. He never said any such thing in Capital or anywhere else. Tip off = there was no such thing as consumer “technology” in 1867. Also, this has nothing to do with Marx’s thoughts on the transition from capitalism to socialism. This quote is a scare-mongering fraud.

Now the big questions is if the above was a real comment or a very fancy comment bot :)

I guess consumer tech actually might have been a slight way off in 1867 ;).
