A few hours ago the first customers picked out their packages from Bytelove Inc, the new US subsidiary of Bytelove AB. This would be the end (or beginning not sure) of a project we started a few months ago.

Bytelove Inc is not just a new shop under another judicial person but a whole new way of working for us that we will probably implement in part also for the EU in the coming months. Some points:

Magento Commerce: New e-commerce platform, yes we are leaving cubecart behind since it never really worked to run with a multistore/language setup anyway. The new store runs our first version of Magento (and no Magento is certainly far from bugfree).

Accounting: Going over to accrual basis accounting together with tighter integration of the Bytelove processes and our accounting program (quickbooks, 99USD hahaha) enables us to work faster and get more exact reporting plus minimizing errors.

Outsourced logistics: All fulfillment is done by an external partner, it is more expensive but it takes away much of the boring part of the business plus it actually force us to build better processes (so I actually think we save money in the long run). The fact that our partner has an excellent api also helps .

So far we’ve succesfully fulfilled a bit over 150 orders and counting … this was by far the funniest project I’ve done so far this year …

Hopefully the new site will be such an injection that we want to actively develop the project further. The original specification is from 2005 so don’t judge us to hard if some of the functions might seem a bit oldfashioned .

The debate regarding copyright is not an easy one. If it was possible for eg an artist to say; “I don’t want my music shared on the internet” and due to some strange super duper algorithm that would be possible …. this would actually be a debate where it would be hard to say yes or no regarding if we need to change copyright laws or not.

The fact is though that in order to uphold todays copyright laws on the internet there would be a need for such a major monitoring of internet traffic that we would live in a surveillance society such as we have never ever seen before (and we are almost already there).

Small iterations is sort of how I believe in doing everything; from marketing, development, projects to life in general. Small iterations makes it possible to quickly change directions, estimate and re-estimate risks depending on how the world changes (or depending on how you re-estimate how you thought the world is working) and it makes it possible for you to change your mind about things without it costing you to much in terms of money and time.

So beliefs of course needs to be challenged from time to time … hence instead of putting together a project into little pieces, giving it away to a few suppliers I made it into one big very nicely specified project. The result … the supplier promise delivery within 4 weeks, agrees to getting paid upon delivery … today I look back on a three month delayed project. Still no delivery btw, they are close though … like they have been for the last month. Tragic for both us and them, we have no product and they have no money.

I consider making a poster saying “small iterations” and sticking it on the wall so its the first thing I see after waking up every morning …
